Born in 1894 on Bhadrapada Vadya Pratipada in Umred, Shri Govindnath Maharaj came from the Bhake family. His father was a close associate of Shri Marotinath Maharaj and a disciple of Shri Bhalchandranath Maharaj.
According to sacred texts: "Bhakya's son, named Govind, is embraced by Bhalchandra. The revered Guru Shri Jayakrishnanath is reborn for the service of the Peeth." (Shri Devlila 33.2)
This verse signifies that Shri Govindnath Maharaj was the reincarnation of Shri Jayakrishnanath.
He played an active role in India's freedom movement, participating in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Swadeshi Movement. His dedication earned him the title 'Guruji' in nationalist circles. His influence extended across national, social, and religious spheres.
Within Shri Devnath Math, he established disciplined traditions for rituals, celebrations, prayers, kirtans, and the Bhiksha Mahotsav. His tenure was marked by an organized and spiritual administration. A defining moment was the installation of the divine idols of Shri Madhav-Manjiri (Radha-Krishna) in the temple.
In 1960, Shri Govindnath Maharaj attained samadhi at Shri Devnath Math, leaving behind a legacy of devotion and discipline.
यांचे प्राकट्य इ.स. १८९४ रोजी भाद्रपद वद्य प्रतिपदेस उमरेड येथे भाके घराण्यात झाले. यांचे वडील श्रीमारोतीनाथ महाराजांचे बालमित्र आणि श्रीभालचंद्रनाथ महाराजांचे अनुग्रहित होते. “भाक्यांचा पुत्र नामे गोविंद । तयासी भालचंद्र अंकी बसवीत । म्हणती आजेगुरु श्रीजयकृष्णनाथ । पुनश्च अवतरत पीठकार्या ।।” (श्री दे.ली. ३३.२)
यानुसार श्रीगोविंदनाथांच्या स्वरूपात श्रीजयकृष्णनाथ पुनः भूतलावर अवतरित झाले.
यांचा भारतीय स्वातंत्र्य संग्रामात असहकार चळवळ, स्वदेशी आंदोलन इ. मध्ये सक्रिय सहभाग होता. राष्ट्रीय चळवळीत त्यांना 'गुरुजी' हे नामाभिधान दिले गेले.
राष्ट्रीय, सामाजिक, धार्मिक आदी विविध क्षेत्रात यांचा विशेष प्रभाव होता.
याशिवाय मठातील कुलाचार, विविध उत्सव, पूजाअर्चा, भजन, कीर्तन, भिक्षा महोत्सव आदी विविध व्यवस्थांचे शिस्तबद्ध आणि सकुशल संचलनाचा आदर्श गोविंदनाथांनी निर्माण केला.
श्रीमहाराजांनी भगवान श्रीमाधव - मंजिरी यांच्या विग्रहाची स्थापना श्रीदेवनाथ मठात केली.
